INSIDE OUT BY TSCHABALALA SELF

(2023)

EXHIBITION Tschabalala Self
Inside Out
25 February – 18 June 2023, Kunstmuseum St.Gallen

Tschabalala Self (*1990, Harlem, New York) is deeply engaged with the medium of painting. She paints with various pigments, materials, textiles and threads. Her unique technique includes found, acquired, and hand-dyed fabrics. With these she creates figures that depict avatars rather than individuals. The artist draws from her personal experiences as a Black American woman. In this context she stages bodies that are often exalted and excluded within her imagined environments.

In collaboration with Le Consortium, Dijon PROJECT DESCRIPTION In 2020, TIME WITH SPACE began managing MICA graduate and sculptor Minho Nukem (1989, Seoul). Soon therafter TWS formed a joint venture with the artist under the moniker "MINUKIM". Around the same time, visual artist Tschabalala Self (1990, Harlem) and TWS founder, Jordan Harper White (1988, Chicago) began a dialogue around the use of technology in artistic practice and exhibition. Fast forward 2022, Galerie Eva Presenhuber and artist Orlando Estrada (1987, Miami) who was a liason with the gallery, along with Tschabalala Self approached MINUKIM for a commission to transform the painting From Afar, 2019 into 3D sculpture. The project began with a translation of the painting into 3D sculpting software, Z-Brush. The four collaborators went back and forth perfecting the form of the standing and seated sculptures, lead by Tschabala Self's prompts, direction and critique. After the final 3D designs were approved, MINUKIM went into production of the 3D printed fiberglass sculptures, parcelling each sculpture into between 36-42 parts. The studio team assembled, finished to spec, ensuring archival practices and expectations were satisfied. Upon approval from Tschabala Self the sculptures were primed and shipped to New Haven, CT to be painted.
